Abstract

Despite his humanitarian philosophy driven principle of life, people did not leave Lalon Sain off criticizing his religious identity and family history. The purpose of this article is to analyze the context of the debate on Lalon's family religion. It is well circulated that Fakir Lalon Sain came of a Hindu family but departing family he received initiation of the great baul Siraj Sain. Lalon Sain composed innumerable Baul songs in light of the universal religion. His baul songs and philosophy ignores any dividing line among various religions. In intellectual sphere, the debate on Lalon's family religion started in 1940. The debate is closely related to politics on colonialism and partition in India. The topic of the debate is influenced with square thought of 'modern' religion. This article will reflect different context of the debate among scholars on the religion of Lalon. The piece of writing has been divided into three parts: 1. the religion and philosophy of Lalon and the established thinking in Bangla literature. The discussions of Rabindranath Tagore and Aksay Kumar Maitra are given profound weight in this respect. 2. Ancient document, especially the summary of the articles published on 'Hitakari' Patrika in 1890s will be there and 3. the appearance of the context of the trend in 1940s to spot Lalon as descendent of a Muslim family.
