Philippe Benoit, a French professor and a scholar of Bangla and French language, came across Bangla language in the eighties of the 20th century. Then he developed a thesis piece on comparative study of Ramayana written in Sanskrit and Bangla. On his long experience of teaching Bangla and Sanskrit literature at a French university, he detected the multi-faceted riches of Bangla literature in depth. He is equally keen on Bangla literature of medieval as well as modern times. He inherited this from his predecessor Franch Bhattacharjee. Philippe's student Dr. Thibaut d'Hubert is now teaches in the University of Chicago. This interview of Philippe Benoit provides not only a lot of information on the history of Bangla studies in France but also the historical and current trends in France in Bangla language and literature studies including translations from Bangla. Moreover, this article motivates the researchers to look into the undiscovered literary resources of medieval Bangla literature.
