Abstract

Abstract: In the history of Bengali language and literature Professor

Dr Muhammad Shahidullah was one of the pioneers. He translated The Mystic Songs of Kanha and Saraha (Les Chants Mystiques de Kanna et Saraha, Adrien-Maisonneuve, Paris, 1928). This work was done in French language as a part of his D. Litt. thesis, and submitted to University of Paris. This thesis has two parts. The great importance of this work lies in its luminous interpretation of the religious ideas exposed in the Doha-kosa and briefing on Kanha and Saraha, a detail discussion of phonology, grammar and prosody. The second part contains the Dohas of Kanha and Saraha with Tibetan version, translation, vocabulary and philological notes. Even after a century, this great work had no Bengali version. Pranabesh Sinha Ray, for the first time translated this work into English language in 2007 and the Asiatic Society of Kolkata published it. This article follows the English version.
