Bengali is the outcome of Hanne-Ruth Thompson's long and intensive journey of discovery into Bangla language structures. Her research on the Bangla language reveals the multifaceted features of one of the major Oriental languages for which lives were sacrificed, creating a unique example of love for a mother tongue. Despite exploring a great number of books, old and new, on Bangla linguistics, Hanna developed a new approach to Bangla grammatical features, based on real language. She picked up living examples of the language and analysed them in detail to illuminate distinctive characteristics of Bangla. Her comparative analysis of Bangla spoken in Bangladesh and in West Bengal has brought forth a realistic, fresh and logical Bangla grammar written in English. Her intensive analysis has made this grammar current, relevant and well-matched with living Bangla language. Bengali will be very useful for foreign students wanting to learn the language, not by memorising patterns but by engaging with the living language. The book is a vital contribution towards illuminating the Bangla language all over the international platform through the London Oriental and African Language Library and it will remain indispensable for native and international researchers on the structures of Bangla.
