Conducting Research is the third chapter of Ethnomusicology: A very short Introduction written by Timothy Rice, published by Oxford University Press in 2014. This essay looks at where, how and with whom the ethnomusicologists carry out their fieldwork. Ethnomusicologists are different from other music scholars. Ethnomusicologists select a community for an extended period of time to study and involve themselves in it. Typically they will live in the community. They will participate in, observe and record musical activity there. They will learn the particular piece or performance of music, learn to play the allied musical instruments and learn to dance. This style of studying music comes from their belief that societies and the associated musical practices are embedded within one another. Ethnomusicology research consists of four main activities: interviews; participant-observation of musical events and community life; music and daneve lessons; and audio and video recording.
