In thisuncommon essay based on personal experience, Deborah Eliette Cukierman [Deborah Jannat] runs through her background and shares some stories of along-running philosophical journey grounded in a wide range of research areas. From an academic background in Performance Studies, Cultural Engineering and Philosophical Anthropology Le. Comparative Mysticism, to training in Hatha and Raja Yoga, notwithstanding professional experiences in European classical music and art house cinema, all lead towards an uncommon spiritual awareness which pervades this unique article, written from her home in Kushtia, Bangladesh.
Taking the freedom to break away from traditional, explicit methodology, she agrees with Roger Bastide and states: "Someone who has had no inner experience of wonder has no legitimacy in lecturing about art. Similarly, someone who has had no experience of faith, cannot truly apprehend religious objects". However, this small scale essay breaks away from any kind of academic speculation; instead, it concentrates on the current outcome of the writer's quest for the Supreme through direct sadhana practices, offering a novel perspective in Ban/studies.
Deborah's simple and straight statement will sensibly help readers to see the Baul society and Baul mai from a different point of view beyond their educative and entertaining vigour, even beyond traditional religious perspective: it's all about unspoken thoughts, philosophical aporia. The essay mainly bases its analysis on two songs collected from Deborah's guru, Fakir Nahir Shah, to lay out a quick outline of the Baul Modelization of the Human Being. Deborah finally states it is not enough to be successful in society: to make a human life worthy, it needs to be directed towards a higher goal.
